ASL Ladies’ Evening – 26 October 2017

“Daar’s ’n plek wat ek van weet
sonder sorge sonder pyn sonder leed
die pad daarheen is ongekaart
die reis daarheen is sonder vaart
en daar is rusplek langs die pad”
Coenie de Villiers

For the third consecutive year, the ASL Ladies’ Evening took place in October, on the beautiful Roseberg farm outside Stellenbosch, in support of breast cancer awareness. Those who have attended one or more of these events will agree with us that it is almost impossible to get a more beautiful place to host the function.

After months of planning, it was finally October 26th, probably one of the coldest and wettest days of this year! Not necessarily favourable conditions for hosting a function in a bedouin tent, but still the rain is extremely welcome in the current drought situation we are currently facing. We rushed to rent gas heaters and to buy 120 blankets, to protect all our guests from the worst cold.

Upon arrival, guests were treated to a welcome drink and a variety of breads and cheeses. After that, everyone took their seats, and Lidien Ludik, the master of ceremony, welcomed them. A tasty main course followed and the ASL clerks, who again acted as waiters, made sure everyone’s glasses were filled, before the show by the guest artist started.

We were particularly privileged to get Coenie de Villiers as a guest artist this year. His outstanding piano playing skills and striking lyrics had the guests enthralled, wiping away a few tears. His performance of an hour was over too soon, and we could have listened to him for much longer. The performance was ended by an unforgettable duet by Coenie and Lidien, with Amanda Strydom’s “Ek loop die pad”. After the show, the ladies enjoyed delicious cheesecake, with a variety of chocolates and nougat. The coffee stall was also a big hit, and perfectly complemented the delicious dessert.

This year we had a silent auction of various impressive items to raise funds for Cansa, and the ladies supported this initiative very well. The evening flew by and after the dessert, the guests slowly started to head home. Looking back, the cold weather definitely played a big part in adding that extra touch of warmth and coziness to the evening. Coenie thanked the guests for the fact that they were a very pleasant audience and “shivered quietly”.

Many thanks to every guest’s support and attendance of the evening. Certainly a big success on ASL’s 2017 calendar.

We are very grateful to Alet Morkel of the Roseberg farm for the provision of her facilities, and also for her and Chris van Rhyn’s signifiant contribution to make the evening a big success. Without them, the evening would not have been possible and, like every year, the decor and the special feeling of the evening were unbeatable.
